Trekking in northeast India will prove to be a rare wilderness experience. The major trekking routes in North-East India includes all the seven states of the North-East India. There are countless trekking routes that have been recently opened for the trekking enthusiasts. For an enthusiastic leisure seeker, few destinations in the world would match the dimensions of the North-East India. As the Himalayan Mountain Ranges also extends through the North-Eastern part of India so it provides a very good scope for trekking.There are lots of adventure activities which can be done in North-East India. In simple language it can be said that North-East India is full of adventure activities. The names of the Himalayan Mountain Ranges are as follows :-

  1. Arunachal Pradesh : Dafla hills, Mishmi hills, Miri hills, abor hills and Patkai hills.
  2. Nagaland : Naga hills
  3. Mizoram : Mizo or Lushai hills
  4. Meghalaya : Garo, Khasi and Jaintia hills.
  5. Sikkim : Kangchenjunga 3rd highest peak located on Sikkim border with Nepal.

These mountain ranges are really very amazing and it provides really a very good opportunity for all kinds of adventure activities.There are mainly three grades of trekking. They are as  follows :-

  1. Easy Trek :- These will call for not more than 5 hrs per day of walking on relatively easy mountain trails. Acclimatisation to altitude is never a concern. Prior trekking experience is not required, but basic fitness is necessary.
  2. Moderate Trek : – These trips will require 5-7 hrs per day of walking. One will have to be careful about acclimatisation. Prior experience is desirable. Good fitness levels are needed to enjoy these trips. Some training up before the trip would help.

 3.Demanding Trek :- On demanding treks, the average day could involve more than 7 hrs of walking. Acclimatization is always a big concern and is carefully planned for. These trips might cover difficult and glaciated terrain where basic mountaineering skills and equipment may be required and can require staying up at high altitudes for lengthy periods of time. These trips go to wild, remote places completely cut off from civilization.

Trekking into Sandakphu starts off from an altitude of 1,524 Bagdogra -Darjeelingmeters (5,000 ft) and gradually climbs up through forests of rhododendron, giant magnolias, spruce and other trees of sub-alpine region and more than 600 varieties of orchids-the largest to be found in one geographical area in the world. For flora worshippers, the months of April and May are the best time of the year for the trek while for those who have an insatiable thirst for a view of the mountains; the best months are in autumn. 3.Sikkim Rhododendron Trekking :-

Sikkim Rhododendron Trek is one of the most exiting trip which offers hiking and short trek to some of the most beautiful Rhododendron region of Sikkim. In spring, from late April to mid-May, the forests of Sikkim are ablaze with brilliant Rhododendron blossoms both in Low and High Altitude region. 4.Phalut Trekking :-

Tumling is a tiny village or a hamlet in the eastern Himalayas, located at an altitude of 9,600 ft and on the way to the popular trekkers’ destination Sandakphu. From Maneybhanjan where the trek or the Jeep safari starts, Tumling is at a distance of about 13kms. As you approach Tumling, you will notice small cottages and huts from a distance. There are probably only 10 to 12 Nepali families who live here. There are also few private lodges and huts that have come up here to cater to tourists & trekkers heading towards Sandakphu. Kalpokhri or The Land of Black Lake is a small hamlet at an altitude just over 300m. En-route to Sandakphu, gets its name from small pond. Kalpokhri is a holy place for those following Buddhism. It is believed that Nepalese villagers worship the Black Lake and no one is allowed to swim or deep in this lake. Sandakphu has always been known as the trekkers’ paradise and located at North West of Darjeeling town at an altitude of about 12,000ft. This is the highest point (or peak) of the Singalila mountain range. The distance from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu is about 32 kilometers. From Darjeeling, the distance to Sandakphu is 58kms (26km up to Manebhanjan). But once you reach Sandakphu after a tedious trek, you will be rewarded with the real bounty of the nature. Phalut is one of the highest peaks of Singalila range and located in Darjeeling district at an altitude of 11,811 ft. This is the second highest point in Singalila ridge after Sandakphu (11,929 ft). Phalut is also in the border of Nepal, Sikkim and West Bengal. After a trek to Sandakphu, many plan for an onward trek up to Phalut before commencing the return. Phalut is further 21kms from Sandakphu. Manebhanjan is the base of Singalila range where the trek actually begins for Sandakphu and then onward to Phalut. The distance of Phalut from Manebhanjan is 53kms. Depending on the ground one can cover, it takes 3 to 4 days to reach Phalut from Manebhanjan. There are both GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, erstwhile DGHC) lodges and private trekker’s huts on the way for night stays.

5.Kanchenjunga Base Camp :-

 Yuksom is located in the West district of Sikkim. Surrounded by an array of religious sites, this historical town in Geyzing happens to be a popular tourist destination at Sikkim and is quite popular among trekkers too. Tshoka is a small village in Kanchanjunga National Park in West Sikkim. Few of houses perch on a ridge with the valley dropping three sides. Basically it is a overnight halt for the trekkers going up to Kanchanjunga Base. Tshoka is one of the perfect places to watch sunrise over Mt. Pandim. Settlement is sparse but cultivation of various crops in summer is a common practice. Tshoka is 2km from Bakhim. Dzongri is a welcome sight for trekkers after the hard climb from Tshoka. At 12,980 feet trekkers feel the affect of altitude at the Dzongri meadows. Dzongri is a large cauldron, mostly meadows, surrounded in all directions by the mighty peaks of the Kanchenjunga range. In every direction is a snow peak to be looked at and admired. For most trekkers Dzongri is a reward on its own. Many finish their trek at Dzongri and head back the way they came. Thangsing is a small settlement on the Goecha La trek. Most trekking groups camp here and some stay for a day to acclimatise. There is a basic hut to stay but it’s quite badly kept. There is a good campsite here and the tents can be pitched with ease. The next destination towards Goeacha La is Samiti Lake. Impressive views of Pandim are on offer along the valley in Thangsing. Goecha La, as by the name is essentially a pass (La means Pass in Tibetan) between Oglanthang and Talung valley. There are 3 significant points for Goecha La, (a) View point 1, which is a the sunrise point, offers stunning view of the high peaks during sunrise (b) View Point 2 – A glacial lake, which can be seen from the moraine ridge and (c) View Point 3 – which is the pass in itself. The lake and then traversing to View point 1 (4600m, 15100ft). It takes around 2 hours to reach. From here looming Kanchendzongha dominates the vista and a vast panorama of peak sweeping towards the south. Several glaciers, streams, lateral and median moraine ridges can be seen on the left while a sheer ice fall sweeping from Pandim on our right. The Goecha La pass (4950m, 16200ft) or 3rd View Point can be seen straight a kilometer ahead. The pass is a wide open one, almost 300m/1000ft.

6.Green Lake :-

 The trek to Green Lake, the base of Mt. Khangchendzonga on the Zemu glacier in North Sikkim is the most enchanting of all treks in this area with a variety of flowers such as rhododendrons, primulas and blue poppies. The view of the Mt. Khanchendzonga is fantastic. The Green Lake base camp is more than 5000 meters ansd so proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. Since there are no trekkers huts or bunglows along this route so any team attempting the trek must be entirely self sufficient, with proper trekking equipments, food, guide, porters etc. Best Season: April-May and October-November. Trek Grading: Moderate to Strenuous. Maximum Hiking Altitute: Zemu Glacier Maximum Camp Altitude: Green Lake. Starting and Ending Point: Bagdogra airport / NJP Railway Station.

  1. Everest Singalila Trekking :-

Hee – Bermiok is a group of villages in West Sikkim that has become prominent tourist destination in the recent past. The area is not one single tourist destination but a cluster of tourist destinations each of which has its pride of place on its own right. The villages of the region are mostly set on the northern side of a long East-West spanning ridge that rises from the Rangit River and continues west till it breaks into a number of smaller ridges before entering Nepal through the Singalila Range. The forest to its immediate South is Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, which connects with the Singalila National Park of West Bengal further south, and to the West, the Nepal boarder. Phoktay Dara is a well-known point to have the most astounding and panoramic views of the some of the captivating peak around the region. Along with the peaks of the mighty Mt Everest and Khangchendzonga, other peaks that can be viewed from Phoktay Dara are Mt Daulagiri, Mt Makalu, Mt Lhotse, Mt Nuptse, Mt Pandim, Mt Kabru, Mt Narsing, Mt Rathong, Mt Sinolchu and Mt Kokthang. In addition to the delightful views of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Darjeeling, Phalut, Sandhakpu, Nunthaley can also be viewed from this point. This point is also visited by a large number of tourists coming for the sunrise and sunset views. The Chiwa Bhanjyang (meaning ‘peeping valley’ in local language) is located at a height of 10,300 ft above the sea level and is one of the renowned Indo-Nepal border passes. Connecting some of the nearby villages, this pass also serves as a primary trading route between India and Nepal.

  1. David Scott’s Trail Trekking :-

David Scott Trekking , David Scott Trail is one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya. Originally this trekking trail was a bridle path established by David Scott, a British officer, in the early 1800s, and was used by people to travel from Assam to Bangladesh. the entire route extends for over a 100 km and takes about five days to trek, the best known existing portion of this horse track is located between the villages of Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang. The trek takes you across the beautiful terrain of East Khasi Hills and covers around 16 km. During this four hour walk you will cross streams, dodge waterfalls, trudge through meadows, pass through sacred groves, valleys and Khasi villages. One can also set up camps on the way and enjoy the captivating beauty of the green rocky cliffs in the Umiam valley. This trek is best enjoyed when travelling in a group. The best time to trek on this trail is in the months of October and November, right after the monsoons and when the climate is favorable.

  1. Dzukou Valley Trekking :-

Dzukou Valley Trekking is one of the prime attractions of the territory, which is known for its trekking trails and which provide sights of mountain ranges and rivulets. The Dzukou Flower Valley is tucked away at 2438 metres above sea level, behind the Japfu range in the north eastern state of Nagaland in India. As the month of June & September arrives, the entire valley is covered with a carpet of beautiful wild flowers. The Dzukou Valley is one of the most ideal places for trekking adventure tour and for peace and nature lovers. The Dzukou Valley is just 30 km from Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland. The swirling streams that loiters through Dzukou freezes during extreme winter. Dzukou Valley is decorated with Lilies, Aconitum, Euphorbia and multi-colored Rhododendrons. The Japfu peak is at a height of 3,048 metres above sea level. This is one of the highest peaks of Nagaland. This peak lies 15 km away from Kohima and is popular among trekkers and adventure enthusiasts who undertake adventure pursuits seasonally. Terraced farms along National Highway 39 grab the attention of tourists.

    Apart from bird watching and exploring woodlands, tourists can have a glimpse of Naga culture at the villages situated nearby. These include Jakhama, Kigwema, Viswema, and Phesama.

  1. Mehao Lake Trekking :-

Mehao is an Unexplored Tourist Destination of Arunachal Pradesh. The Mehao Lake, a Natural Lake amidst lush green forest is located in the heart of Mehao. Wildlife Sanctuary in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh. Its water surface area is approximately 100 hectare with a periphery of about 4800 meter. The Lakes is situated just 14kms away from Roing, the district headquarter of Lower Dibang Valley district. It resembles a bowl on the hill top onGoogle Earth. It is a logographic (low nutrient) lake and the water of the lake is crystal clear. The area is very rich in flora and fauna as the Mehao Wild Life Sanctuary is covered with dense forest. The species of trees found in this Wildlife Sanctuary are- Alnusnepalensis, populus ambeli, Castanopsis indica, C.spicata, Wuercus griffithii, Q.amellosa, Betula alnoides, Albizia mollis, Michelia spp., Mangolia spp. etc.
